Low Carbon London Reports Published

After several years’ work, the Low Carbon London project (the Project) led by UK Power Network’s (UKPN) has published its reports.

The £28.3 million Project involved UKPN working with 11 project partners and was funded through Ofgem’s Low Carbon Networks Fund together with £6.6 million from UKPN and other sources. Focusing on trailing and demonstrating a wide range of potential smart approaches in the Greater London area, the Project has generated a large store of data and knowledge that will be of immense interest to those involved in smart grids and which should especially hold valuable learnings for other urban areas.

A summary of some of the areas examined by the Project and a few of the conclusions reached include:

  • Demand Response, Smart Meters, Time of Use Tariffs & Distributed Generation: The Project believes it has conducted the largest ever British trial of smart meters and that new demand side response commercial contracts for large customers developed under the trials will save UKPN’s customers £43 million by 2023.
  • Electrification of Heat & Transport: The Project collected data from one of the largest electric vehicle trials in Britain and concludes that the impact of electric vehicles may be more manageable than has often been assumed.
  • Network Planning and Operation: Learnings from the Project suggest that households with the highest levels of income and occupancy (>3 people) offer the greatest potential for energy efficiency measures. Active Network Management systems and energy efficiency measures were also tested.
  • The future role of the Distribution System Operator: The Project believes Distribution Network Operator’s (such as UKPN) will increasingly manage load and generation and act as a system (as opposed to merely network) operator.
